Costuna, M.B.A.A. (2014).If You Lose Your Face, Don't Wince: An Investigative Study on Department of Education's Evaluation of Reading and Language Textbooks Used by Sixth Grade Public Elementary School Pupils in Metro Manila,Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication

Abstract

This study investigated the four level textbook evaluation process that the Department of Education (DepEd) employs since 2004 in ensuring the quality of textbooks that the pupils receive. The researcher aims to illustrate this using the English for You and Me Reading and Language textbooks for grade six, written by Elodie Cada and published by Book Wise Publishing, Inc.

Using Max Weber’s Theory of Bureaucracy, the study showed that the flaw in the system is not limited to the process alone, but also in the implementation of the four-level evaluation, thus resulting to the substandard quality of textbooks that the pupils are using. The researcher used qualitative data gathering, such as convenience and purposive sampling, people, paper, and online trails, and review of secondary data.

The findings of this study is journalistically-written in a four-part investigative report.
