FAMILY TYPES, ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN, AND PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOR AS DETERMINANTS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION

In order to help minimize environmental degradation and develop a more sustainable society, citizens should engage on pro-environmental efforts. Pro environmental behavior begins at our homes where communication has its vital role in enabling family members to relay their opinions, uncover environmental issues, as well as make relevant pro-environmental decisions. Communication between children and their parents could instill pro-environmental behavior, but may be influenced by several factors. This study analyzed the relationship between high school students’ communication on pro-environmental behavior with their family communication patterns, level of concern for the environment, and pro-environmental behavior. Findings indicate that students who are more concerned about the environment communicate more about pro-environmental behavior. It was also found that past pro-environmental behavior partially mediates the relationship between environmental concern and communication. Results show differences in terms of frequency of communication of the four major family types, however there were no differences with their quality of communication. Overall, the study suggests that communication on pro-environmental behavior is significantly determined by environmental concern, family communication patterns, and pro-environmental behavior.
